CASTLETOWN
CASTLETOWN SCARCELY EXISTED EXCEPT AS A LAUNCHING BEACH FOR FISHING BOATS BEFORE THE ROYAL NAVY DOCKYARD WAS SET UP. IT WAS THEN DOMINATED BY THE PRESENCE OF THOUSANDS OF ROYAL NAVY PERSONNEL PASSING THROUGH. THIS RESULTED IN A LARGE NUMBER OF PUBLIC HOUSES AND SHOPS TOGETHER WITH CAFES AND ROYAL NAVY OUTFITTERS.
SINCE THE DEPARTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY IN THE 1990S THE AREA SUFFERED A DEPRESSION BUT ENJOYED A PARTIAL REVIVAL WITH THE INFLUX OF DIVERS VISITING TO ENJOY THE SPORT.
THE NEARBY NATIONAL SAILING ACADEMY AND THE 2012 OLYMPIC SAILING EVENTS BASED IN PORTLAND PROVIDED A FURTHER - IF TEMPORARY - REVIVAL IN THE AREAS FORTUNES.
