WELCOME TO THE REVIVED ‘STEPS IN TIME’ WEBSITE OF OLD PORTLAND PICTURES!
The ‘Steps in Time Image Project’ (SITIP) was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and was active for several years until the Lottery funding ended and the work stopped in about 2008. By this time over 5,000 pictures related to Portland in the pre-1945 era had been collected and digitized. Over 3,500 of these were put into a website so that they could be shared with the public.
A grant of 300 by the Friends Of Portland Museum kept the online archive available until October 2013 when the funding for maintaining the website ran out.
Rather than see the public access to this amazing archive lost for ever I have reproduced it using modern software and I am hosting it on my personal domain space at my own expense.
This new archive website is more user-friendly than the original with simpler navigation and more readable text.
The site may be navigated using the cascading menu above left or using the ‘Navigation’ page which may be reached by clicking here.
One new feature is the inclusion of modern photographs showing the same view as an old picture. An example of a ‘twinned picture’ is shown below.
